Moong Dal kheer is a different variety of dessert, which uses all natural ingredients. Because of the ingredients, it is so delicious and healthy. You can even have this as a snack.
Delicious and healthy dessert in 15 mins:
Traditionally it takes about an hour to make this moong dal kheer but I found a way to reduce the total cooking time to 15 mins.
Whenever I cook dal for Sambar or Subzi, I cook little extra dal and store it to make this dessert later. Even if I am not planning to make this payasam on the same day, I make it and store it in refrigerator or freezer and use it later.
Melting jaggery and making syrup is a long process in this recipe, but I made it simple by using the microwave. By using this method, the whole process takes only 5 minutes.
Place Jaggery in a heavy bottomed microwave safe bowl and add a little amount of water. Melt the mix at regular intervals, by taking out the bowl after every 30 – 40 seconds and mix well to avoid burning. Once the Jaggery is completely melted, strain it and use it in kheer. Avoid using plastic bowls or light weight containers, even though it is safe to use in the microwave.
Using this method, you can make this dessert in 10 – 15 minutes.
Easy and healthy dessert:
Moong dal payasam is an easy and healthy dessert. Moong Lentil is loaded with fiber, low in carbs and fat. This payasam is made with milk, ghee, coconut, moong lentil, jaggery, raisins, and nuts. It is an excellent way to include moong lentil in the kids diet.
Using Jaggery and Coconut in Kheer:
Jaggery gives a unique taste to this sweet. The color of this kheer depends on the quality and color of the Jaggery. Compared to sugar, Jaggery is a healthy sweetener. It is loaded with excellent health benefits.
I used frozen shredded coconut in this recipe; you can also use grated or sliced coconut. Coconut is an optional ingredient in this recipe, so you can drop the coconut if you like. However, I strongly recommend coconut as it gives an excellent taste to this kheer.
