A Healthy Meal Idea:

Spinach Moong dal curry with chapati is a healthy meal idea. Also, easy and simple to make in less time. Spinach is a healthy green leaf vegetable loaded with Dietary fiber, Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Minerals and Calcium. Moong dal is a low-fat beans with the good amount of protein and dietary fiber. Spinach and moong dal together makes a healthy and delicious side dish. Spinach Moong dal curry is a light and comfort side dish that stays gentle in the tummy. This curry is a popular side dish in South India. Spinach Moong dal curry is also known as Pappu keerai or keerai kootu in South India.

Smart Cooking Tips:

1. Avoid adding more water in this curry. This side dish tastes good if it is in a thick consistency.

2. You can also grind coconut and add it to the curry. Coconut gives a flavor to the curry.

3. You can also cook moong dal in a saucepan or a microwave. But cooking the moong dal in a pressure cooker yields a soft and mushy dal that is perfect for the curries and sabzi.

4. You can also replace the moong dal with Toor dal.

Ingredients
  • 0.50 cup MOONG DAL
  • 2 cup SPINACH RAW
  • 1.50 cup WATER
  • 0.50 cup ONION CHOPPED
  • 2 no OIL
  • 1 tsp CUMIN SEED
  • 2 no RED CHILIES
  • 1 tsp GARLIC CHOPPED
  • 1 no ROMA TOMATO
  • 0.25 tsp TURMERIC POWDER
  • 0.25 tsp HING OR ASAFOETIDA
  • 0.50 tsp SALT TABLE
Instructions
  1. Rinse the spinach thoroughly in a cold running water. Rinse the moong dal separately.

  2. In a pressure cooker add spinach, moong dal, 1.50 cup of water and cook up to four whistles. Turn off the heat and allow the pressure cooker to cool naturally. Open the pressure cooker and mash the dal and spinach together using a spoon and keep it ready.

  3. In a pan, heat oil, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, red chilies and chopped garlic. Cook until the garlic color changes into golden brown.

  4. Add chopped onion and cook until onion becomes soft. Add turmeric powder and mix well. Cook until turmeric powder loses its raw smell.

  5. Add chopped tomato and cook until tomato becomes soft and mushy. Add mashed dal and spinach mixture, salt and mix well. Spinach moong dal curry is ready to be served.
